TEMPERAMENT The Pomeranian is one of the most popular toy breeds with a life span of 12 to 15 years. It has an extroverted, lively and friendly personality, is very curious and intelligent. It can be trained quite easily if this intelligence is harnessed at a young age. The Pom gets along with humans and other pets alike. It loves to be pampered and makes an ideal lap dog, but is also very playful and active and enjoys playtime and exercise. The Pomeranian is a very affectionate and loyal dog and makes an excellent companion in most situations. It is not recommended in a household where likely to be teased by children as it may become snappy. They also enjoy barking so this must be dealt with from an early age or they will become very yappy. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS The Pom possesses a small, fox-like face with very dark brown, almond shaped eyes and small, erect, triangular ears. The nose is usually black but may also be brown, depending on coat colour. The Pomeranian features a compact body ideally weighing around 2kg for males and 2.5kg for females. They have a double coat with thick, soft undercoat and a straight, long and harsh outer coat. The coat needs daily brushing to avoid matting, especially during shedding. The tail is full and brushy and curls up onto the back. Colours come in orange, red, sable, cream, white, blue, black, brown or parti-colour. CARE Maintenance of the coat is essential in the Pomeranian and weekly brushing (at least) is recommended. The outer coat should be parted and particular attention given to the dense undercoat to avoid matting, especially during molting season. Eyes should be cleaned carefully with damp cotton wool or cotton tip. Teeth should be given extra care as Poms are prone to early tooth loss. Use a small toothbrush (no toothpaste!) to remove plaque buildup and feed your pom a good quality dry food to keep teeth and gums healthy. Raw chicken necks on a regular basis also assist in keeping teeth clean. Have your vet scale your dog's teeth when necessary. Regular walks and active play time will keep Pom fit and happy and add variety to his playful and curious nature.
