About Chihuahua & Pomeranian Safe HouseSue and her husband live in the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne with their many four-footed children.
Sue works full time in a sales and clerical position where she has been for the last eleven years. Animals have always been her greatest love and Chihuahua and Pomeranian Safe House allows her to dedicate herself to her two favourite breeds of dog when they are in need of special care. Most of the dogs who come into the Safe House are rescued from death row at various Victorian and interstate pounds. Others have lost their owners to illness or death and need a new home. Some dogs are rescued from an abusive owner. Others are just not wanted any more by their owners. They are all welcome here. All dogs are vet checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-flead and wormed before they are put up for adoption. Other health issues are vet treated as they arise. The dogs are supplied with shelter and warm bedding, nutritious food including home-cooked doggy stew, fresh meat and bones, clothing during cold winter months, and lots of love, of course. How Chihuahua Safe House startedIn 2005 I was searching the internet and came across a Victorian website dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of Chihuahuas. Until this time, I wasn't aware that such a thing even existed, let alone that I would be running it in a few years time!
There on the pages of this site was a beautiful, nine month old chocolate Chihuahua named Clyde. It was love at first sight and that afternoon I visited Chihuahua Rescue with the intention of giving him a new home. A couple of hours later after work, I tentatively knocked on their door and as the saying goes, the rest is history. *Our first Chihuahua Clyde or Ratty as we like to call him
A year or so later, we adopted another dog from Chi Rescue, Rebel, a Chihuahua x Pomeranian. Rebel was the funniest little fellow and we loved him dearly from the start, even though he had a bit of "baggage". We put the effort into changing some of his bad habits and slowly, he became like a new dog. *Rebel, or Mousie our Pom x Chi. He was so special to the both of us
In 2007 Rita and Mayer expressed their desire to retire from Chi Rescue. After 15 years of valuable service and committment to rescuing and rehoming dogs, it was time to find a new home for Chi Rescue. After much procrastination, I decided to put my hand up for the task. My husband, George was very supportive of my decision and we started building a secure fence around the property to contain our future doggy charges. Our first rescue Chi arrived in October 2007.
After the tragic, accidental death of our precious little Rebel on February 3rd 2008, Pomeranians were incorporated into the rescue and Chi Safe House became Chi and Pom Safe House. Our first Poms arrived in late February 2008.
